Heidi Stern

The Man-hole, Germany, 2004

Clay, oil color and metal, 14x20 cm.

The sewage worker glancing at us, as we regard him from our superior vantage point, is certainly the reflection of the service employee at the hub of Heidi Stern’s creative work.

His size relative to our own; his situation below the observer’s eye-level; the intimate treatment extended to the details of his features while the net is about to close in on his world; and his distant position underneath the glass cube – all these stress the significance of the distance between him and us, as is the artist’s professed intention.
